How to Repair Mongoose JLR Pro Clone to Fix Connection Error?

 One of MHHAUTO experts points out how to tell different Mongoose JLR clone interfaces and fix connection issue.

1. How to identify the Mongoose Pro JLR clone cables? Which one is better?

 

Few years ago, the Mongoose Pro JLR clones available online were an exact clone (almost) of the original Mongoose Pro and everything works perfect with stable connection to the vehicle. Recently, from the end of 2022 the clone devices selling online are with a completely different PCB and elements inside, there is no ATMEL chip anymore and the new replacement one comes in BGA package (instead of QFP).

You can tell the difference from the PCB.

The cheap clones still work perfectly fine using the original Mongoose Pro JLR drivers, however there is a problem with the vehicle connection. This is especially occurring working with Toyota/Lexus cars with Techstream leading to the “Unable to connect to VIM” error. This is not a software or driver problem (re-installing everything will not fix it) – this is a clone device design problem and the solution is really simple. 

 

2. How to fix the Mongoose JLR Pro clone?

 

All you need to do is to connect the “Chassis Ground” and “Signal Ground” pins together (4 and 5 pin) – as seen in the photo, it can be done like that with just a piece of wire or more professional way – with a jumper, so if needed it can be switched ON/OFF (depends on the application and working condition).

Fix worked and users are able to read MS-CAN and HS-CAN with a recent mongoose clone from china.

 

 

3. Is there a good replacement for Mongoose JLR Pro clones?

 

Yes, VXDIAG VCX SE, Xhorse MVCI Pro , Openport and Godiag J2534 are good replacement of Mongoose JLR pro clones.

mongoose cable clone (the mangoose cable) is dangerous for reprograming. It will not properly program module nor program keys.  But it is recommended and stable version for JLR beginners or DIYers.

If you are working on a MY18+ vehicle then you will need a suitable interface either the JLR Bosch DOIP or VCX SE DoIP VCI.  VCX SE is the approved j2534 interface that allows you to do online programming via online account. It can also be used as a J2534 passthru device for OEM diagnostic program ODIS, techstream , Xentry passthru etc.

How to Program Jaguar XJ 1999 Key with JLR SDD?

 Here comes an old Jaguar XJ key programming review using clone JLR Mangoose sdd cable.

 

“I’ve had my 1999 X308 for 17 years, and have avoided any help with service, and have kept her sorted with just a generic scanner.

I successfully loaded V125 and then went in search of a cable. My car is a 1999 XJ8. I tried the Ford “VCM” cable, no joy.
Then I bought a Mangoose from OBDII365.com for $40. Took a couple of weeks to get here (UK).

As shown, it comes with some pretty authentic-looking Mongoose badges, and comes with a DVD with drivers and a copy of V164. I stuck with V125, and the LED’s in the Mangoose change from flashing red to green when connected to the laptop.

In fact, as shown, the SDD recognizes the cable as a MongoosePro JLR.
Also, in the SDD “System Information”, it records Mongoose Pro JLR as the Gateway Device.
So, my car, being a 1999 X308, SDD takes me to IDS. And from there, when prompted to check trouble codes, it freezes:

A little further searching of the program freeze problem…Others using IDS for the first time have had this occur when trying to read codes.

I tried several tricks to fix the protocolaccessserver error, like setting the XP firewall “Off”, and reinstalling V125 and the Mongoose msi. No joy.

I found and installed IDS_DVD130_FULL with these other programs (the SDD V130 worked without these other programs, but I figured the other programs weren’t just included for “cocktail chatter”, so I added those too):

No small task to find, download and install these 8Gb total-size files.

Success!!!

This is a screen shot of V130 IDS reading trouble codes (DTC) on a Second scan… Note the blue bar at the bottom with “Please Wait”. So, this screen shot shows both the reading process and the result from the previous scan.

Five of the 6 systems were successfully read. (Note, Climate Control Module had an error, and was never able to be read– not an issue, at least, not for me…)

The 3 DTC’s shown in the screen shot were: P1000, and two other old DTC’s (Mfg specific) that a generic scanner will not clear, but were cleared in IDS! Who knew??? After 17 year of ownership, my vehicle is DTC-free, maybe for the first time!!!

 

Now, Let’s get down to the key programming part.

I have one working key for my 1999 XJ8 (VIN: SAJHD1049XC878441). I’ve only had one key for 17 years, but a few years back, I got a key cut, but never got ‘round to programming.

So now, I have SDD V130 and Mongoose cable. I’m a newbie with SDD, but I’ve successfully read the trouble codes (and cleared them), and found the Security setting for Transponder Programming.

 

Final Report:

My total cost for a DIY additional key was under $100, including key blank, cutting, and setting up SDD V130 and JLR Mongoose cable (laptop not included).

Meganos ID13 is correct for 1997-1999 vehicles, and Meganos ID48 is for 2000 up. My VIN shows it’s one of the last 1999 made at VIN 878441.

So, for completeness, here’s the procedure to program the key(s) when you have the cut key and the proper transponder (along with ALL old and new keys):

*From version 137, SDD cannot do offline programming. So stuck on older version if need to program keys.

Go to the tab in SDD (arrowed) and the highlighted section:

JLR SDD 160 Installation Guide:

Tested on Windows 10 64bit

 

Step 1: Install SDD 160 Setup

Create a new SDD 160 folder on desktop
Copy and paste all files from software CD or download links to SDD 160 folder

Run SDD 160.00_FULL setup

Select setup Language

Press Next to install SDD setup
Accept license agreement and firewall compatibility

Choose destination folder C:/Program Files (x86)/JLR

Select All Language to install

Press Install

Install JLRMeasureApplication until succeeded

Complete installing HV Safety Installer

Install MOXA UPort setup

Choose destination folder C:/Program Files/Moxa/USBDriver

Press Install until finished
SDD is configuration new software installation

SDD V160 setup installed completed
Restart computer now.

 

 

Step 2: Install JLR Driver

Open JLR Driver folder

Install J2534 MangoosePro driver for 64bit system
Accept license agreement
Press Next

Click Install

Finish Install J2534 jlr mangosoe Pro JLR driver

 

Step 3: Install SDD Patch

Extract JLR SDD Patch folder to SDD 160 folder
Install JLR SDD-2020 patch

Select Offline version to install
Open SDD notepad on patch folder

SDD notepad contains login user name and password

Run JLR SDD software on desktop
SDD will require to enter user name and password

Copy and paste user name and password from SDD notepad
Press Identify
User authentication successful

Go to Settings to select software language and save

Quit software.

 

 

Step 4: Connect mangoose cable and run software

Connect mangoose or pro cable with computer

Go to Device Manger to check interface is well connected
Run JLR SDD software

SDD will tell you MangoosePro JLR is connected

Read VIN

Start diagnosis

2. Open RDS 7
3. Double click ’RunProgs.bat’.
4. Accept the installation of ‘Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 package’.
5. Select ‘I agree’ to the ‘Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 license agreement’.
6. Select ‘Install’.
7. ‘T4 Installer version’ will open.
8. Select ‘Set CD Drive letter Z’.
9. Select ‘Disk Management’.
10. Right Click and select ‘Change Drive Letter and Paths…’.
11. Select ‘Change’.
12. Select from the drop down box ‘Z’.
13. Go to ‘T4 Installer version’ and select ‘OK’.
14. RDS 7 will now install.
15. The Machine will restart automatically.
16. Eject the RDS 7 Disk.
17. Install the ‘Panasonic Script’.

The use of third party Firewalls and Anti-Virus software will cause the installation and functionality of SDD to be affected and may result in SDD not installing correctly.
